Trout Fishing

Of the great fisheries in the world, Lake Taupo, New Zealand and the rivers that feed the 'Great' lake are best renowned for their incredible Trout fishing.

 The Rainbow Trout is the predominant fish caught. The Brown trout, or as commonly referred to the 'Brownie', continues to be the most illusive of all trout. Both species make stunning trophies to be mounted in the study or den.

The natural environment of the lake and its catchment ensures that trout grow rapidly to a good weight and maintain excellent condition.

Anglers can expect to be challenged by the fight of the Rainbow and the cunning of the big 'Brownie' and be surprised by the size of trout caught in the 'Great Lake' Taupo and its tributaries. The average weight range of trout caught is between 4 lb and 6 lb and much bigger fish of over 10 lb are not uncommon.

Fishing on Lake Taupo has become more sophisticated over the years with the use of Down Riggers bringing a new dimension to deep water fishing in the 'Great Lake'. To an increasing extent Lead, Copper and Steel Lines are being replaced by the Down Rigger which allows lighter and less line to put the Angler in direct contact with a thrilling fight.

Harling at a depth of up to 20 feet is also a proven method used during the smelt run and morning and evening fishing. Jigging is becoming more and more popular as the technique is adapted to lure those big trout that cruise the lake bottom.
